Toshiba Launches Glasses-Free 3D TVs

Toshiba today introduced its first 3D display that does not require special glasses to play 3D images. Promised are two televisions, with 12 screens and 20 inches (50.8 cm and 30.5 respectively) and a laptop, also of 12 inches equipment, the show during the CEATEC consumer electronics fair 2010, held in Japan, begin to be sold in the country “at the end of this year”, said the manufacturer in a press release.

For Europe have not yet advanced dates launch represents a breakthrough in the face of most of the technologies proposed by the competitors, which involve the use of traditional glasses to provide the 3D experience-as indeed happens in the movies. The possibility to dispense with the glasses was already assured but only on smaller screens and intended to be used at a shorter distance from the user’s eye .

Sharp had promised in April, the genus screens intended for portable devices and the and the same type of proposal will be accessible with the portable console that Nintendo launches in March 2011 , the 3DS. Other manufacturers have also shown the ability to view 3D TV without glasses but always using external devices that attach to the tv.

Yet, most have shown reticence with regard to the possibility of providing larger screens, citing the difficulty in providing a 3D experience without the aid of glasses in case of screens that are not placed near the user’s eye But Toshiba the new televisions bails offer a three-dimensional viewing experience comfortable .

According to the company, “the technology developed for the new 3D TV without glasses uses a system of integral image definition, which captures nine different perspectives (paralaxes) of each 2D frame the brain overlaps to obtain a three-dimensional image print”.

To dispense the glasses “Toshiba’s engineers have developed a powerful engine and an algorithm to extrapolate these prospects of 2D frames which added a perpendicular lenticular sheet, with a wide range of lenses, which causes the brain to override the prospects .

As already usual in 3D TVs, the user can switch between 3D and 2D visualization, that can” be made in seconds ” , underlines the Director of Marketing at Toshiba Portugal, Jorge Borges

the company acknowledges that, with small screens, intended still “early adopters”, passing the objective of launching the demonstration that the “3D auto-estereosc√≥picos screens are viable technological both commercially,” added the charge. Jorge Borges admits still needed “a few more years for the development of larger screens-above the 40 inch 3D TV without glasses at a reasonable price.”

the presentation at international fair of electronics is scheduled for the end of this morning. The (few) images that were made available online are reproduced below.
